The History of Purse Parties
To really understand home purse parties as they are
today, it's important to look back at the history of the
home party. For anyone who isn’t aware, the first home
parties actually began in household products, including
Tupperware.
But how did Tupperware start it all?
Well, it all began in 1942 when a new plastic called
Polyethylene was formulated. It was exactly what a Du
Pont chemist, Earl Tupper, was looking for when looking
a polymer that was pliable, attractive and very long
lasting. He saw the potential of the plastic for house
hold products and began producing the first Tupperware.
Of course, his first creation was a bathroom drinking
glass that could be purchased in a rainbow of colors but
that creation quickly moved into the lidded bowls that
Earl Tupper’s Tupperware is famous for today.

In the late 1940s, Thomas Damigella and Brownie Wise
were selling household products through Stanley Home
Products. Purchasing through local plastics
distributors, both began offering Tupperware as part of
their product line, and started moving enough Tupperware
to attract Earl Tupper's attention. In 1948, Tupper met
with Damigella, Wise, and several other local
distributors at a Sheraton in Worcester Massachusetts to
discuss a new distribution plan. Modeled on the home
party plan pioneered by Stanley Home Products and
expanded and refined by Brownie Wise, the home party
plan became and remains the exclusive outlet for
Tupperware.
From there, it was only a short time before Earl
Tupper’s Tupperware parties became an enormous success
and fit in perfectly with America’s prosperity after
World War II. With prosperity came new homes and
Tupperware parties became popular and the purchase of
Earl Tupper’s extremely useful products became
commonplace. I’m sure Mr. Tupper never thought that this
would be the model used for today’s purse parties?
Tupperware was so successful that by 1958, Mr. Tupper
was able to sell his company for approximately sixteen
million dollars and retire for life.
